Project #2 - Soundscape and Artist Statement

Artist Statement:

My goal with this project was to create an auditory narrative, simulating the sounds of a person going throughout their daily life. I really wanted to place emphasis on the overwhelmingness that sounds can have on a person, especially if the sounds they hear are repetitive and happen on a day to day basis. I began the sound sequence with an alarm clock going off, getting increasingly more irritating until it was turned off. I then followed the alarm clock with various sounds of a person getting ready, including doing laundry, flushing the toilet, and making breakfast. The sound of a car starting then follows along with sounds of a work environment, symbolized typing, chatter and an elevator beeping. The sounds then follow the person back home and symbolize the person winding down for the night. My process for this project was to follow the sequence of a narrative while also layering and adding effects to various sound clips. The effects and layering of the clips create the sense of overwhelmingness in daily life and the stress that sounds can create. I wanted the soundscape to reflect the stress that can build up when one has varying basic human tasks that they have to make time for on a daily basis. These include varying chores such as laundry, cooking, cleaning and working. I think the use of layering and effects did a great job in emphasizing the stressful and overwhelming feelings that I aimed for the listener to feel and connect with throughout this piece.
