Climate Emergency
Artist Statement
At first, I approached this project with the theme of corrupted communication in the media. After thinking about it more, I wanted to create a deeper meaning through my projections. I decided to go with a theme of wildfires and depict deforestation due to the climate crisis our world is currently facing. A lot of my personal interests and hobbies revolve around natural environments, and it's something I'm really passionate about, so I felt inclined to represent a piece of myself and my interests through this project as well. To execute this, I created a 3D mountain made up of geometric shapes such as squares and triangles. To assemble the mountain, I sketched a basic mockup of how I wanted it to look and then cut the shapes out of cardboard and pieced them together with tape. After the entire structure was built, I spray-painted it with white spray paint so that the projections would show up more vibrantly. I projected environmental pictures and videos from my own camera roll and from Adobe Stock onto the geometric mountain. The background I connected to Midi Pad buttons so that people who interacted with the display could "impact the environment" by changing the background from a bright blue sky to dark flames. This demonstrated how humans have a huge impact on the environment through their actions and can directly cause habitat destruction through wildfires. I really enjoyed this project. Projection mapping is definitely a medium that I would continue to play around with in the future, and I'm happy with how my final project came out.
