MAGGIE'S BLOG

Art is an outlet for expressing one's thoughts, feelings and ideas. Through the zine project I plan on expressing my own current thoughts and feelings as I’m beginning to readjust to moving back to Colorado. I want to place a large emphasis on the healing qualities of nature through my zine, while also connecting the emotions that come with moving away from the people and things that I love. Currently I’m a sophomore at CU Boulder so I've experienced moving away from my family and friends before, but this time around it feels more difficult than it did during my freshman year. I want to begin the zine with an image of a butterfly flapping in a windowsill staring at the world outside. I want to also make a graphic of a thought bubble coming from the butterfly that has images of other butterflies, symbolizing the butterflies closest family and friends inside the bubble. In the beginning pages of the zine I want to capture the feelings of sadness and longing. But as the pages of the zine develop I’m going to have the butterfly venture outdoors and end up on a mountain, slowly becoming overcome by the beauty of the world around it. The butterfly is eventually going to sit on top of a tree branch and take in the scenery around it and the same thought bubble is going to pop up again. Yet this time the bubble is going to slowly fade into a heart and the butterfly is going to come to peace with its emotions as it expresses gratitude for the natural beauty of the world around it.
