Artist Statment
Initially, this project was inspired by the movement of water and how glitches can interact with that movement to alter and manipulate its visuals. I wanted to focus on water as a consistent visual element throughout this project, as it has been a recurring theme and symbol in my life. As I thought about it more and realized through critique, water has been a key element in representing the ups and downs in my emotions and feelings. Through the incorporation of glitch with water visuals, I was able to take that symbolism and directly connect it to emotion. My process for this project included using varying glitch techniques and combining them with the imagery of waves and underwater movement. The main techniques I used to create glitches were adding effects to the imagery in Audacity, pixel sorting, and using datamosh. With audacity, I randomly added effects and then would view their outcome and put the images back into the software to add more effects until I got my desired outcome. Some of my favorite images from this process incorporated lots of color, corruption, and reversed the imagery in different ways. The waves represented feelings of calm before the storm, overwhelming pressure and stress, and tranquility. The underwater visuals represented suffocation and reaching for something that feels out of touch. I really liked using the technique of glitch for this project. I think it's really interesting how it combines corruption with simplistic imagery to demonstrate deeper meanings in a symbolic way.
