Artist Statement

For this project, I decided to focus on a theme of childhood nostalgia and its relationship to filter use, particularly through social media. As a kid, I loved to play around with different filters on social media platforms like Musical.ly and Snapchat. Being proposed with a project that had us making filters immediately made me think about that aspect of my childhood, leading me to want to create filters for characters that were important to me as a kid. The characters I recreated in my filters were Mario, Luigi, and Strawberry Shortcake. For the Mario filter, I created a Mario hat, mustache, and an animated gold coin. For Luigi, I did basically the same thing, but with Luigi’s iconic green hat. And for Strawberry Shortcake, I made a sun hat, a freckled face effect, pink hair, and an animated strawberry. I really enjoyed some parts of this project, especially making the actual objects in 3D. I’ve had a lot of experience with 3D forms before, having taken ceramics and sculpture classes, so I liked being able to approach 3D art in a digital format. Although building the objects was fun, I did get really frustrated with parts of this process. My animations were giving me a really hard time with exporting correctly, and I had a bunch of general hiccups with formatting pieces of my effects in Effect House. I spent a lot of time trying to make the final filters look the best that I could, and I overall like how they turned out.
