For this reading response, I choose to learn more about the world of augmented reality (AR) and its role in art by reading the article "Augmented Reality in Art: Blurring the Line Between Physical and Digital" by MoMAA. This article discusses the evolution of augmented reality, tracing its origins back to the 20th century and the technological advancements that have shaped this artistic medium into what it is today. The adoption of this artistic style into today's society is also discussed. One of the primary ways people engage with this medium of art today is through the use of filters on social media. AR artists also place digital sculptures in public spaces. The sculptures don't exist until the viewer actually interacts with the software to see the AR, usually through a QR code. The article shared a lot of information on blurring the lines between the physical and digital worlds. Art can add layers to artwork showcased in public spaces and art museums; it interacts with 3D space to create something more, and adds to existing artistic mediums. I really enjoyed this article and learning more about the world of digital art, AR, and the ways that it interacts with physical artwork and spaces. I also appreciated how the author touched on how “AR art is inherently ephemeral. Platforms change, apps die, and code breaks.” This is an interesting perspective and a unique attribute of this artistic medium. When it comes to art, I think a lot of times people will think of a ceramic vase or oil painting that will last centuries, but with AR, technology is constantly updating and changing. So it's interesting to understand that this type of art may be very temporary but extremely visually rewarding.
